borders

Presidents of legislative branches and their advisors during the discussions
in the 18th
session of FOPREL, which took place in Tikal, the capital of the
Mayan world.
The strategic goal of FOPREL is to contribute in developing
its Member States in terms of constitutional rights, democracy,
social security, and preserving cultural diversity.
The Forum of Presidents of
Legislative
Branches in Central America and the Caribbean (FOPREL) consists
of eight permanent members: Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador,
Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama and the Dominican Republic.
In addition, the Republic of China Taiwan entered FOPREL as a member
with observer status during FOPREL's 9th session.
To reach its goals, the
following objectives have been established:
a) Adopt holistic
initiatives that aim at establishing and/or strengthening
institutions supporting the development of a democratic culture,
with emphasis on the public good.
b) Establish agile
mechanisms based on consultations and initiative which lead to a
common position based on solidarity, to protect the region's true
interests in terms of social, economic and political growth in the
region, when meeting with third-parties.
c) Promote the development
of legislative studies that can ensure regional exchanges and
consultations, in order to efficiently enhance each country's
handling of parliamentary exercises.
